Essex Pubs
The Essex Pubs list covers the former Essex postal
districts of IG and RM. These include everything outside of the London E postal
districts and within the boundary of Greater London.
Info
The list is in three parts:
- The first part lists pubs that are still open, or that are closed and not
converted to other use, as these may re-open again after a while. Going by the
rules used in the London Drinker, they have to sell draught beer of some sort,
either real ale or fizz. Bars selling bottled or canned drinks only are not
listed.
- The second part lists pubs that are no longer open as pubs. The majority
of these in London have been converted to residential use, and some to
commercial use such as shops or offices. Some are classed as restaurants, and
are sometimes pubs that now only serve drinks when purchased with food.
- The last part is a cross reference of name changes that have occured,
usually since the Pub guide where I got the initial information from.
Information has been gathered from a large number of sources, primarily from
the "sector" guides that cover London, researched and produced by the local
CAMRA branches in London. Most of them have been revised in the last eight
years, apart from the West London guide, which is now very out of date since its
1988 publication! The guides are as follows:
- Essex Beer Guide: 9th Edition, published in 1999, covering the
Essex suburban districts of IG and RM.
The most up to date information is gathered from the London Drinker magazine,
produced for all the London CAMRA branches. Each issue includes "Capital Pub
Check" where details of changes to pubs are listed. Those changes are then
incorporated into these lists. As of 2000, the magazine is now Free, but
published only bi-monthly.
Key: The coding of the pub names is a bit tricky, but fits in with
what I am aiming to do. The pub name is in a different style depending on if I
have been there and if the pub serves real ale or not. The styles are as
follows:
- BOLD: means I have drunk real ale in that pub, at the time of my
visit. It may be that real ale has been removed since, but that is not
recorded, unless the pub goes onto the closed list.
- UNDERLINED: means I have drunk in there, but no real ale was
available. A note then says whether there are any unused handpumps or not, as
these are often brought back into use again.
- PLAIN: means I have not been there yet, and it has been noted somewhere
that real ale is available.
- ITALICS: means I have not been there yet, and it has been noted
somewhere that no real ale is available.
John Adams (J.Adams@ucl.ac.uk), 26th
June 2008. Number of pubs open = 202, of which I have been to 80,
which is 40%.
