E1 Ace of Hearts: 60 Stepney Green. (D1/1). Tolly Cobbold. No handpumped beers!.

 

E1 ALMA: 41 Spelman Street. (A1/2). Free House. Trumans Best, Youngs Bitter. Formerly the Ed Tilney brewery which used the same source of water as Trumans. The site of the pump and well are still in existence in the garden. Darts, snacks in the evening and cooked meals at lunchtime. Opens at 5. 45pm on Saturday evenings.

 

E1 Anchor & Hope: 90 Duckett Street. (D1/3). Watney Combe Reid. Websters. Choice of real ale occasionally changes, but one from the Watney range is always available. One bar local, with fine collection of pot plants and a display of badges of the former independent fire bridgades before the amalgamation into the London Fire Bridgade in 1965. Darts, shove h'p. Lunchtime meals and evening snacks. Opens at 5pm on Saturday.

 

E1 ARCHERS: 42 Osborn Street. (A1/4). Whitbread. Whitbread Wethereds. Beer not available at all times.

 

E1 ARTFUL DODGER: 47 Royal Mint Street. (A2/5). Free House. Websters, Youngs Bitter, Fullers London Pride. Re-opened in September 1985 having been closed for four years. Formerly an Ind Coope pub. A Grade II Listed Building which still has its former name of the Crown & Seven Stars on the top floor. Lunchtime meals and snacks in the evenings, darts, realfire.

 

E1 ARTICHOKE: 91 Stepney Way. (C1/6). Watney Combe Reid. Websters, Watneys Combe Bitter, Ruddles County. Large and welcoming modern pub with a well lit leather-seated lounge and outdoor drinking area. Two bars and a restaurant that can be used as a function room. Opens at 5pm on Saturday.

 

E1 Australian Arms: 18 Bigland Street. (B2/7). Courage. No handpumped beers!.

 

E1 BANCROFT ARMS: 400 Mile End Road. (D1/8). Trumans. Trumans Best, Trumans Sampson. Comfortable and friendly one bar pub opposite Queen Mary College. Tastefully decorated following "renovations" in 1971, 1977 and 1985. Darts. Snacks at lunchtime. Opens at 5pm on Sat. Francis Bancroft, officer to the Lord Mayor of London left money for almshouses that were built in 1735. The site opposite was Peoples Palace now Queen Mary's College.

E1 BELL: 50 Middlesex Street. (A1/10). Trumans. Trumans Best, Trumans Bitter, Websters. One bar friendly well decorated pub with cocktail bar downstairs. Ideal watering hole for Petticoat Lane Market. Restaurant. Opens at 8pm on Sats.

 

E1 Black Bull: 199 Whitechapel Road. (B1/11). Free House. No handpumped beers!

 

E1 BLACK HORSE: 40 Leman Street. (A2/12). Courage. Courage Best Bitter, Courage Directors. Busy, smartly furnished pub with video jukebox. Has been known to have a DJ and rather loud music. Lunches and snacks. Darts and function room.

 

E1 Black Horse: 168 Mile End Road. (D1/13). Bass. No handpumped beers! Now keg. A Grade II Listed Building because "Inside the western lobby is a fine tiled mural showing abrightly coloured scene with a black horse". Has stood opposite the former Charrington brewery for about 200 years. Pool. Lunchtime snacks.

 

E1 BLIND BEGGAR: 337 Whitechapel Road. (C1/14). Watney Combe Reid. Watneys Stag, Websters, Watneys Combe Bitter. Large and well decorated one bar pub popular with the young and old. Supposedly gets its name from the 'Ballad of the Blind Beggar of Bethnal Green' which is 60 verses long. General Booth gave one of his first sermons from around here in 1865 and the pub was the scene of a Kray gangland killing in the 1960's. The pub itself was built in 1895. Lunchtime food and evening snacks. Opens at 5pm on Saturdays. Garden.

 

E1 BREWERY TAP: 500 Commercial Road. (D2/15). Watney Combe Reid. Websters. Split level one bar house with scythes hanging from the ceiling and loud music. On the site of the Commercial Brewery closed in the 1930's. Food at lunchtime.

 

E1 BRICKLAYERS ARMS: 71 Redmans Road. (D1/16). Watney Combe Reid. Websters, Ruddles County. One bar locals' pub, with display of plates, prints and photographs. Lunchtime food. Cheapest pint of Ruddles known in the area. Garden.

 

E1 Britannia: 232 Cable Street. (C2/17). Ind Coope. No handpumped beers! Keg only. Basic working persons' house with a surperb 'Meux & Co' mirror in the lounge bar, which was the brewery that originally owned the pub. East London fives dartboard. Lunchtime snacks. Opens at 6. 30pm Saturday.

 

E1 Britannia: 44 Morris Street. (C2/18). Watney Combe Reid. No handpumped beers!

 

E1 British Prince: 49 Bromley Street. (D1/19). Ind Coope Taylor Walker. Taylor Walker, Burton .

 

Interesting two bar, old fashioned, locals pub. Darts and pool

 

E1 BROWN BEAR: 130 Leman Street. (B2/20). Ind Coope. Burton. A Grade II Listed Building because part of original glass remains with brass letters on sills and brass rails inside. Busy at lunchtimes when meals are available, darts, pool and function room. Opensat 5pm Saturdays.

 

E1 BULL & PUMP: 72 Shoreditch High Street. (A1/21). Ind Coope. Burton. Comfortably furnished pub, with photos of film and pop stars on the wall. On the site of former pub used by Sir Isaac Newton. Name refers to Shoreditch being a favourite stop for cattle drovers on their way to Smithfield Market and to the nearby Shoreditch parish pump. One bar pub with restaurant. Live music Fridays and Saturdays. Opens at 5pm on Saturdays.

 

E1 CARLTON ARMS: 238 Bancroft Road. (D1/22). Bass. Charrington IPA. One bar pub with a real fire, darts and shove h'p. Lunchtime snacks. Opens at 5pm on Sat.

 

E1 Carpenters Arms: 135 Cambridge Heath Road. (C1/23). Bass. No handpumped beers!

 

E1 CASTLE: 44 Commercial Road. (A2/24). Courage. Courage Best Bitter, Courage Directors. Friendly two bar pub which has boxing connections. Darts, pool, video jukebox and upstairs function room which is a restaurant at lunchtimes. Not open on Saturday evenings.

 

E1 CAXTON: 50 The Highway. (B2/25). Watney Combe Reid. Watneys Combe Bitter, Websters. Formerly the Artichoke. Comfortable, recently extended pub, with a newspaper history on the walls. Private bar doubles as a function room. Live music Thurs, Fri & Sat. Cooked meals lunchtime and evening snacks. Opens at 5pm Saturday evening. Garden.

 

E1 China Ship: 4 Orton Street. (B2/26). Bass. No handpumped beers!.

 

E1 CITY DARTS: 40 Commercial Street. (A1/27). Trumans. Trumans Best, Trumans Bitter, Trumans Sampson. On the Local List of Listed Buildings. Busy darts orientated pub formerly called the Princess Alice. Meals at all times, live jazz on Wednesdays. Function room.

 

E1 City of Carlisle: 61 Royal Mint Street. (A2/28). Trumans. No handpumped beers!

 

E1 COLET ARMS: 94 White Horse Road. (C1/29). Bass. Charrington IPA. A building on the "Local List". Traditional semi-island bar surrounded with mirrors and red walls with gilded ornamentation. Comfortable, quiet, very much a locals pub. Named after founder of St Pauls School (1509), Dean of St Pauls Cathedral, John Colet, who lived in White Horse Road. Darts, Shoveh'p. Food all times.

 

E1 COMMERCIAL TAVERN: 142 Commercial Road. (A1/30). Bass. Charrington IPA. Lively one bar locals pub with darts and pool. Occasional live music. Lunchtime food. A Grade II Listed Building. Function room.

 

E1 Crown & Dolphin: 56 Cannon Street Road. (B2/31). Bass. No handpumped beers!

 

E1 Crown & Leek: 11 Deal Street. (B1/32). Trumans. No handpumped beers!

 

E1 CROWN & SCEPTRE: 84 Ben Jonson Road. (D1/33). Shepherd Neame. Shepherd Neame Master Brew. Comfortable locals pub, also known as the Jug House. Darts.

 

E1 CROWN & SHUTTLE: 226 Shoreditch High Street. (A1/34). Trumans. Trumans Best. This small one bar pub is uniquely named; the shuttle stands for the local weaving industry imported from France in the 18th Century while the crown refers to the one time royal ownership of the area. In the Kingsland district, for example, there used to be one of Henry VIII's hunting lodges. Lunchtime meals and evening snacks, darts, pool. Opens early on Saturdays.

 

 

 

E1 CUCKOO: 97 Wapping Lane. (C2/35). Trumans. Trumans Bitter, Websters. Previously called the White Swan. Comfortable pub with pictures of aeroplanes and names of old beers Darts, lunchtime meals and evening snacks.

 

E1 Dean Swift: 2 Deancross Street. (C2/36). Watney Combe Reid. No handpumped beers!

 

E1 DICKENS INN: St Katherines Dock. (A2/37). Free House. Courage Best Bitter, Courage Directors. Beers called Dicken's Own Bitter and Dicken's Own Special (brewed at Tooley Street) are also available. Very pricey tourist attraction in style of beams, benches and sawdust. Beneath an 18th century warehouse stood the present structure made of European redwood. The building was moved 75 yards to its present site situated in pleasant surroundings of marina and Tower Bridge. Meals at all times. Opens at 5pm on Saturday.

E1 DUKE OF NORFOLK: 30 Massingham Street. (D1/40). Ind Coope. Taylor Walker. Friendly and homely back street local that holds discos at weekends. Darts (East London fives board), lunchtime snacks. Opens at 6pm on Sats. Garden.

 

E1 DUKE OF SOMERSET: 14 Little Somerset Street. (A2/41). Bass. Charrington IPA, Bass. Busy, modern one bar pub named after a former Duke of Somerset who used to own property in the area. Darts. Meals at all times. Opens at 5pm Sat. Outside drinking area.

 

E1 DUKE OF WELLINGTON: 12 Toynbee Street. (A1/42). Bass. Charrington IPA, Bass. Well lit, two bar locals pub with basic public bar and comfortable lounge. Lunches and snacks. Darts. Opens at 7.30pm on Sats.

 

E1 Duke of Wellington: 63 Brady Street. (C1/43). Free House. No handpumped beers!

 

E1 Fifth Avenue: 169 Mile End Road. (D1/44). Courage. No handpumped beers!

 

E1 FISH & RING: 141 White Horse Road. (D1/45). Free House. Fullers London Pride, Youngs Special, Davenports , Fullers ESB. A real free house. Comfortable and very friendly corner locals pub run by Harry & Daisy White, who have some 30 years local experience as licensees. Winner of the Society for Preseration of Beers from the Wood (SPBW) Best London Pub Award 1985. Has a large selection of whiskies. Darts - including an East London Fives Board. Opens at 5. 30pm on Saturday evenings. Live piano, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings.

 

E1 FORTY FIVE: 45 Mile End Road. (C1/46). Ind Coope. Burton. Real name is the Three Cranes. Panelled one bar pub with darts and shove h'p. Lunchtime meals and evening snacks. Opens at 5pm on Saturday.

 

E1 FOUNTAIN: 438 Mile End Road. (D1/47). Bass. Charrington IPA. Modern two bar pub with chandelier style lights in the saloon. Hosts six football teams in various leagues. Darts, pool and shove h'p. Lunchtime meals and evening snacks. Garden.

 

E1 FRYING PAN: 13 Brick Lane. (A1/48). Trumans. Trumans Bitter, Websters. Smart one bar locals pub with darts, pool, shove h'p and snacks and meals at all times. Opens at 5pm on Saturday evenings. The frying pan was used as an emblem for braizers and ironmongers.

Pleasant pub frequented weekdays by locals and Spitalfield Market workers taking advantage of the 6am to 9am opening hours. Lunchtime meals and snacks in the evenings. Opens at 5pm on Saturdays. Real Fire.

 

E1 GOOD SAMS: 87 Turner Street. (B1/53). Trumans. Trumans Best, Trumans Bitter. Formerly the Good Samaritan. Made into an 'Open House' which has spoilt a one time East End Local. A cocktail high stool style bar with plastic plants which look as if they need watering. A red house, the carpets are red, as are the lightshades and wallpaper. Known as Sammys to generations of staff and students from the London Hospital. NB Patientshave been known to 'slip out' for a quick pint.

 

E1 GRAVE MAURICE: 269 Whitechapel Road. (C1/54). Trumans. Trumans Bitter, Trumans Best. Smart and pricey one bar pub named after Count Maurice of Nassau, prominent soldier of late 16th and early 17th centuries. Food at all times. Opens at 5pm on Saturday.

 

E1 GUN: 54 Brushfield Street. (A1/55). Trumans. Trumans Best, Trumans Sampson, Trumans Bitter. Has 6am to 9am licence. On its 3rd site in 300 years. The first site was in Artillery Lane, the second site is now part of Spitalfield Market. It has been on the present site since 1926. Comfortable pub with friendly manager who ran the Alma in Cambridge. Darts, pool, function room, lunchtime mealsand evening snacks. Closed Sundays. Real fire.

 

E1 Hayfield Tavern: 158 Mile End Road. (D1/56). Bass. Closed. Due to re-open in December 1986 selling Charrington IPA.

E1 HOLLANDS: Brayford Square. (ex 9 Exmouth Street). (C3/58). Free House. Fremlins. A Grade II Listed Building because of "Original interior with boarded ceiling, pine panelling and settles. Engraved and painted glasswork. Elaborate fireplaces and overmantles. Listed for Interior". Treasure house of Victoriania, breweriania and old photos and press cuttings. Been in the hands of the Holland family since 19th century. Real ale may not always be available. Lunchtime food. Garden.

E1 KNAVE OF CLUBS: 25 Bethnal Green Road. (A1/74). Ind Coope. Burton. Has large original Victorian wall adverts for brands of spirits and is a Grade II Listed Building because of it. Also known as the Bird House. Darts, pool, public bar, function room, snacks and meals at lunchtime. Opens at 6pm Saturday evenings.

E1 LORD NELSON: 230 Commercial Road. (C2/78). Bass. Charrington IPA. Well renovated pub with Victorian plates on walls in the lounge. Darts and pool. Lunchtime food. Opens at 5pm on Saturday evening. Used to be the 'Brandy and Wine Stores'.

 

E1 LORD RODNEYS HEAD: 285 Whitechapel Road. (C1/79). Bass. Charrington IPA. Narrow locals' pub with fish tank and wooden panelled ceiling. Named after Admiral George Brydges Rodney who captured the West Indies from France in 1762, was the victor of the 'moonlight battle' off Cape St Vincent against the Spanish (1780). Recently leased from LRT by Banks & Taylor, the independent brewers from Shefford and will sell their beers. Darts (five board), shove h'p. Lunchtime meals and evening snacks. Opens at 5pm on Saturdays.

 

E1 MERCERS ARMS: 34 Belgrave Road. (D1/80). Bass. Charrington IPA. A Grade II Listed Building. Smart one bar lounge type pub with green decor and pink curtains. Popular with the locals. Darts. Lunchtime snacks. Live piano Saturdays.

 

E1 MR PICKWICKS: 70 Leman Street. (A2/81). Trumans. Trumans Bitter, Trumans Best, Websters. Formerly the Garrick Tavern. A Grade II Listed Building. Busy pub decorated in mock Dickensian theme. Darts, function room. Meals and snacks at all times. Opens at 5pm on Sats.

 

E1 Nags Head: 15 Whitechapel Road. (A1/82). Courage. No handpumped beers!

 

E1 NORFOLK VILLAGE: 199 Shoreditch High Street. (A1/83). Bass. Charrington IPA, Bass. On the site of the former Cambridge Theatre of which this pub was the bar. During World War II the pub was taken over by the US Army and the upstairs rooms were used as a brothel. Darts, lunchtime meals and evening snacks, live music, Friday disco, friendly landlord. Garden.

Popular and friendly side street pub, frequented by students and CAMRA members. Pictures of old East London street scenes on the walls. Real Fire.

E1 PROSPECT OF WHITBY: 57 Wapping Wall. (D2/100). Watney Combe Reid. Watneys Combe Bitter, Websters, Watneys Stag , Ruddles County. A Grade II Listed Building because the "Interior is much altered, but some 18th Century dado panelling on first floor". Popular with tourists and the well to do. Decorated in a basic manner with interesting posters and mirrors. This riverside pub was originally built around 550 years ago and is reputed to have been known to Pepys, Judge Jeffreys and Dickens. Function room and restaurant. Opens at5. 30pm on Saturday.

It may derive from the combination of distillation apparatus (still) amd the symbol of an early licensees' association (star).

Judge Jeffreys was reputedly captured at this Inn. Grade II for interior, group value and historical association". The cellars used to be dungeons for those awaiting deportation to Australia. Name derives from fact that Ramsgate fishermen used to land their catch here. Food at all times. Would be a better pub without the jukebox. Garden.

E4 BULL & CROWN: The Green. (A1/1). Ind Coope. Ind Coope Bitter. Near Chingford BR station. Large three bar town centre pub popular with young people. The late Pevsner in his Buildings of England-Essex calls this 'Edwardian pomposity with plenty of yellow Terracotta in the wildest Loive style'. It is a pity the interior has been so hacked about. Incidentally this was the first pub on the way to the Forest when the railway ended at the present railway bridge over Whitehall Road hence its size. (JH).

 

E4 COUNTY ARMS: 420 Hale End Road. (B2/2). Trumans. Trumans Best, Trumans Sampson, Websters. Big and busy corner pub with fake beam style treatment. Food lunchtimes and evenings. Built in 1908 by the Herts & Essex Public House Trust Co (later the Trust House Hotels) by Douglas Scott. One of the new pubs built with 'no towdry advertisements, no cheap brass or stained glass to offend the eye' which also served coffee and food to 'raise the tone' of the public house which had fallen into disrepute with the residents of Highams Park. Recentley refurbished in rustic style with woodern beams. Decorated with pictures of horse riding and hunting. Dates from 1870's or earlier. Barclaycard may be used to order drinks.

 

E4 ROYAL FOREST: Rangers Road. (B1/15). Free House. Scotch Youngers. A Berni Inn. Large Elizabethan style roadhouse on the edge of Epping Forest. Smallish bar reached through left hand entrance. Darts. Bar meals Mon-Fri lunchtime. Berni restaurant operates all sessions. The windows have coats of arms in stained glass.

 

E4 ROYAL OAK: 219 Kings Head Hill. (A1/16). McMullens. McMullens County. Smart and well decorated suburban style pub on the main road. Two bars plus a childrens room, darts, shove h'p and bar billiards. Food at all times. Opens at 6pm on Saturdays.

E4 WHEELWRIGHTS: 94 Hatch Lane. (B2/20). Whitbread. Whitbread Wethereds, Whitbread Flowers Original. Formerly the Horseless Carriage. Single bar pub with several levels seemingly built to resemble a stable - Chingford meets the Wild West? Good if you like waggon wheels. Beefeater Restaurant. The 'Master', Alfred Hitchcock was born in Leytonstone.

It is a good example of adapting the simple basicdesigns of the rows of Victorian houses in the area into the facade of a larger building. The artifical stone sign built into the corner of the building is at least worth a passing glance. (JH).

E17 ESSEX BREWERY TAP: St James Street. (A2/11). Bass. Charrington IPA. Custom redecorated hangout for 25 year old groovers with island bar. Good of its kind but too noisyto drink in for conversation despite comparativelycheap goodish pint. Darts. Disco in the upstairsroom till midnight Fri and Sat. Once the 'tap' ofthe Tollemache Brewery opposite. (JH).

 

E17 FLOWERPOT: 128 Wood Street. (C2/12). Bass. BassSingle bar pub that has boxing prints on the wallsand a Wenlock drinking hall-type mirror. Snacks at all times. Built in 1863 as an Essex Brewery pub. Highly recommemded for both beerand the cheapness of their rolls. Opens at 5. 30pmon Saturday.

 

E17 GROVE TAVERN: 74 Grove Road. (B2/13). Bass. Charrington IPA. Popular pub unobtrusively refurbished. Darts. Patio drinking area. Built in 1868 as 'The Britannia'it is worth trying to spot the mistake in the mirror adverts behind the bar which are in any case good examples of this type of advertising. (JH). E17 LORD BROOKE: 47 Shernhall Street. (C2/14). Bass. Charrington IPA. Large, well appointed Victorian local with three bars and function room. Garden. Plays host to varied clientele including numerous sports teams (rugby, darts, pool, crib etc) The pub name commemoratesthe marriage in 1881 of Francis Greville (then holder of the title) later the 5th Earl of Warwick to 20 year-old Frances Maynard, heiress to the 560acres of the manor or Walthamstow. He was to become Lord Lieutenant of Essex.

 

E17 Lord Kitchener (COPPERMILL): 205 Coppermill Lane. (A2/15). Free House. Fullers London Pride, Fullers ESB, Charrington IPA, Pedigree. Now reopend as a free house after a long and varied career as an off license and the keg only 'Lord Kitchener'. A small one-bar oasis in an otherwise publess desert region, which means it is frequently standing room only on busy nights. Cooked lunches available. The old copper mill nearby is a listed building used by the Water Board as a stores depot. Darts.

 

E17 LORD PALMESTON: 254 Forest Road. (A1/16). Bass. Charrington IPA. Huge Victorian pub with four table pool room opening off lounge with resultant large following. Large crowded lounge, small quiet public. Darts. Function room. Snacks. Note the very fine 'Art Nouveau'etched/cut glass windows and similar glass in thebar back, indicative of the high standards (and awareness of current trends) of those who supplied fittings to pubs. The glass is worthy of inclusionin the William Morris Gallery in Forest Road. (JH)

 

E17 LORD RAGLAN: 199 Shernhall Street. (C2/17). Watney Combe Reid. Watneys Combe Bitter, Websters, Watneys Stag. Quiet pleasant pub, not one for a rowdy night. Lunchtime food and snacks in the evening. Garden. First licensed 1855. Name commemorates the Crimean War Commander. Rebuilt 1880's. Cellar always used toflood in heavy storms. Lord Raglan was Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Army to the East in 1854. He died of Crimean fever in 1855.

 

E17 LORNE ARMS: 64 Queen's Road. (B2/18). Bass. Charrington IPA. Friday and Saturday nights PAID admission to saloon disco. Darts and pool. Lunchtime snacks. Occ live music. Tucked away in the seldom used main entrance is a superb example of paintings backed by mirrors - a wonderful accurate series of pictures ofstags fighting, hawks attacking herons and calm serious shy bitterns looking on. The whole work seemingly the masterpiece of some travelling 'handseer'. (JH).

Isolated backstreet local in the oldest part of Walthamstow, very pleasant, but nothing like a typical East London local. Reminds oneof a typical village pub in Yorkshire with oak beams and brass decorations. A pub definataly worthvisiting though a bit pricey. Morning coffees.

The present building dates from 1875. The original, called 'The Harrow' was demolished in 1873 during construction of the railway and stood where Wood Street Station is now.

E17 RISING SUN: Woodford New Road. (D2/25). Bass. Charrington IPA. Thirties roadhouse on main road, also accessible by path from Walthamstow Road/Forest Rise. Excellent food. Darts and bar billiards. The IPA is the only bitter available so it is always in condition. Real fire. Original building dated from c1890 and was Taylor Walker.

 

E17 ROSE & CROWN: 55 Hoe Street. (B2/26). Trumans. Trumans Bitter, Trumans Best, Trumans Sampson. Real ale in public only. Massive games room (2 dartboards, 4 pool tables, 2 snooker tables and bar billiards). Pleasantly decorated but not really aimed at the beerdrinker. Restaurant. Dates from 1865rebuilt 1892.

 

E17 ROYAL STANDARD: 1 Blackhorse Lane. (A1/27). Ind Coope. Taylor Walker, Burton. Live music every night (entrance fee). Extensions till midnight at weekends. Mainly young clientele, basically a rock venue rather than an alehouse.

 

E17 SPORTSMAN: Markhouse Road. (A2/28). Bass. Charrington IPA. Beer reasonably kept but not always available. Ex-Common Gate reopened after 8 years. Popular but not much atmosphere. Function room. Occasional livemusic. Still retains old Burton. and Porter tilingon the outside south wall. Cost £1900 to build in1887/8!

E17 VICTORIA: 186 Hoe Street. (B2/31). Free House. Trumans Best. One long T-shaped room. Pleasant landlord. Darts and pool. The once busy restaurant/tea room of the Theodore Komisarjesky's Granada cinema has now become a pub. Some of the original decoration can still be seen but drinkers should try to visit the cinema foyer at least to sample the remaining delights of this early exercise in fantasy architecture. In the main cinema the original decoration with its grand Spanish features is largely intact. (JH).

EC1 ARTILLERY ARMS: 102 Bunhill Row. (D1/2). Fullers. Fullers London Pride, Fullers ESB. Friendly small busy one bar ex-Truman and ex-freehouse. The pub is opposite Bunhill Cemetery and the Artillery Ground, headquarters of the oldest regiment in the British Army - the Honorable Artillery Company - which celebrates its 450th aniversary in 1987. Quite a lot of HAC memorabilia is on loan to the pub, and the sign shows the HAC's arms. Function room, hot and cold snacks.

 

EC1 BARLEY MOW: 50 Long Lane. (C2/3). Whitbread. Charrington IPA, Whitbread Wethereds, Greene King Abb. Was in the last guide as a Charrington pub but now appears to belong to Whitbread but selling Charries IPA - you work it out! Long narrow cosy up-market pub opposite Smithfield Market. Lunches. Closes at 9pm and all the weekend.

 

EC1 BETSEY: 56 Farringdon Road. (A2/4). Shepherd Neame. Shepherd Neame Master Brew, Shepherd Neame Invicta. The wine bar of this recently renovated Dickens character named pub (formerly the Butchers Arms) also sells the real ales. The function room also has a bar which is available for small parties etc. It is a pleasure to see this pub open again with a beer not common in London. Cooked food at lunchtimeand snacks in the evenings. Opens at 8pm on Sat.

EC1 BLUE POSTS: 86/89 Cowcross Street. (B2/7). Bass. Charrington IPA, Bass. Very comfortable pub, friendly landlord. The pub is sometimes known as Eugene's. The name is said to be derived from days gone by. When cattle were brought to Smithfield they were to be booked offically into market. For various reasons this was not always done, and areas outside of the market were designated by colour for the marketing of animals. Hence the blue posts refer to one of these areas. EC1 CHEQUERS: 44 Old Street. (C1/14). Whitbread. Whitbread Wethereds, Whitbread Flowers Original, Fremlins. The sheild of the Warrenne family is, in heraldry, "chequy or azure" (squares of gold or blue). Chequers is also an ancient sign denoting a drinking house. Meals at lunchtime, snacks at all times.

Recent tasteful renovation revealed a totally mirrored ceiling (must be seen) in this one bar pub. The clock after which this pub is named is working and accurateas it should be as the pub is in the Clock & Jewellery centre of London. Look for the Lion and Unicorn above the main entrance. Darts, pool, function room, hot and cold snacks at all times. Opens at 7. 30pm on Saturday evenings.

 

EC1 COACH & HORSES: 26/28 Ray Street. (A2/17). Ind Coope. Burton, Taylor Walker. Two roomed backstreet local that must be one of the nicest looking pubs from the outside in the area. Circular foyer, pillars outside decorated in relief. Snacks at lunchtime, closed Saturday evenings.

 

EC1 COACH & HORSES: 4 St John's Square. (B2/18). Whitbread. Whitbread Wethereds, Samuel Whitbread Strong Ale, Whitbread Flowers Original , Castle Eden, Brakspears PA. Reputed to be on the site of a 'Dirty Dicks' pub. This fifteen -year-old pub serves Winter Royal in season and was recently refurbished in what is to be the style of all Baldwin Inns. Restaurant doubles as a function room. Closed Saturdays and Sunday evening. A coaching inn has stood on, or near this site since early in 16th century. In mid-1800s was the HQ of the Knights of St James of Jerusalem, a philanthropic society.

EC1 CROWN & WOOLPACK: 394 St John Street. (A1/22). Courage. Courage Best Bitter, Courage Directors. Did you know that the Lord Chancellor's seat is still called a woolsack? You do now. Modern renovation complements the pub windows. Function room, darts pool, hot and cold sncacks at lunchtime. Not open until 8pm on Saturday evenings. Lenin and his associates are reputed to have met regulary in the upper room in 1905.

At one time the sign of this pub was a beaver hat with a miniature barrel beneath it. This showed it to be the inn of Sir Christopher Hatton. Hat-tun. Get it?

 

EC1 HOPE: 94 Cowcross Street. (B2/42). Watney Combe Reid. Websters, Ruddles County. Circa 1855, bowed and curved, etched windows, silver inlaid mirrors mark move of live animal market to Caledonian Market. It was built as an inn during the days between the medieval and modern market, (1870) in an area which was then parkland. It is alleged that the pub was erected over the Path of Hope leading to a sanctuary church, which condemmed prisoners from Newgate Prison were led, if theyhad received a last minute reprieve. 6am-9am. EC1 LORD NELSON: 17 Mora Street. (C1/54). Watney Combe Reid. Websters, Watneys Combe Bitter, Watneys Stag. After losing his right eye in action off Corsica in 1794 and his right arm at Santa Cruz three years later, Nelson went the whole hog and died at Trafalgar in 1805 when some 18 of 33 enemy ships had been destroyed but Nelson's fleet remained intact. Topless dancers 6 nights and 7 lunchtimes a week which probably explains the high price of the beer. Pool. Function room. Meals and snacks at all times. Closes at midnight Fri & Sat. EC1 LORD RAGLAN: 61 St Martin's-le-Grand. (C2/56). Courage. Courage Best Bitter, Courage Directors. Called the Bush and then the Mourning Bush until its reconstruction in 1855. Multibar pub with eating and drinking on about four levels. This pub was once entitled to open 24 hours a day by royal edict after the landlord opened to King Charles II in the early hours of the morning. The present name is in memory of a hero of the Crimean War.

 

EC1 METROPOLITAN TAVERN: 95 Farringdon Road. (A2/57). Free House. Adnams Bitter, Greene King Abbot, Ruddles County , Sam Smiths OBB, Pedigree, OWD ROGER. Former Ind Coope house which also has a large downstairs bar. Pool, darts, live music, function room. Closed Saturday evening but has a 2am extension Mon-Fri. Snacks and meals at all times.

 

EC1 YE OLDE MITRE TAVERN: Ely Court. (B2/58). Ind Coope. Friary Meux, Burton. Ely Place was the residence of the Bishops of Ely, and this building was erected in 1546 by Bishop Godric for the Palace servants. The licence of the pub used to be issued from Cambridge. Difficult pub to find, look for the alleyway on the left with an iron bar down the middle. See the preserved cherry tree that Sir Christopher Hatton and Queen Elizabeth I are supposed to have danced around. Snacks. Closed weekends.

This 200 year-old pub may well get its name from a local well or fountain in an area that was noted for underground rivers. The old style of the pub has been well kept up and there is a preservation order on the building. Snacks. Opens at 7. 30pm on Saturday evening. Originally called 'The Old Fountain Knights' according to a newspaper clipping from mid-1700's.

Named after Nathaniel Bentley whose bride-to-be died on the day of their wedding. He thereafter lived his life in a couple of rooms in filthy conditions. A Finch's pub. EC4 BAYNARD CASTLE: 148 Queen Victoria Street. (B2/2). Bass. Charrington IPA, Bass. Has a medieval look with beams etc; the name commemorates a nearby castle, some of the remains can still be seen, built by Baynard, a mate of William the Conqueror. The pub has numerous levels and anupstairs games room (pool). A friendly place. Hot and cold snacks. Opens at 5pm on Saturday.

 

EC4 BELL: 6 Addle Hill. (B2/3). Bass. Charrington IPA. A locals pub about 150 years old, well hidden away in this rather quaint area. Darts. Snacks. Closed Sundays.

 

EC4 BELL: 29 Bush Lane. (B1/4). Courage. Courage Best Bitter, Courage Best Bitter. A pub is said to have been on this site for 400 years and its name reputedly comes from the fact that a bell on or near this site gave an alarm of the Great Fire of London. Note pub sign done in relief at the top of the building. Preservation Order. Only granary bread used in sandwiches. Stays open to 10pm but closed weekends.

 

EC4 BLACK FRIAR: 174 Queen Victoria Street. (B2/5). Free House. Adnams Bitter, Tetley Bitter, Boddingtons Bitter , Bass. A Nicholson's Tavern. Built in 1875, this house was remodelled by H. Fuller Clark in 1905. Rich and elaborate marble alabaster and mosiac wall and ceiling designs , in art nouveau. Was restored by Larkin, May & Co. in 1983. Look for nursery rhymes in the Grotto bar. EC4 YE OLDE CHESHIRE CHEESE: 145 Fleet Street. (A2/11). Marstons. Historic pub built in 1667 replaces one destroyed by the Great Fire the previous year. Hard to spot pub sign in form of a lamp with the pub name on it.

 

EC4 CLACHAN: Old Mitre Court. (B2/12). Scott & New. Youngers IPA, Scotch Youngers. Scottish and Newcastle are showing themselves to be hot on the heels of Nicholson's as pub refurbishers. The pub reminds one of holidays in Scotland. The carvery downstairs serves real ale as does the upstairs bar. Absense of games and music enhances the mood. Closed weekends and early (9pm) weekdays.

 

EC4 COACH & HORSES: 35 Whitefriars Street. (B2/13). Bass. Charrington IPA. A single bar with TV and sawdust on the floor. Grade II listed building. Nicknamed Old Scotch Doors, reputedly from olden days when print workers knocked on the door for a bottle of scotch. Pool. Snacks. Opens at 7pm on Saturday.

 

EC4 COCKPIT: 7 St Andrew's Hill. (B2/14). Courage. Courage Best Bitter, Courage Directors. Interesting galleried pub, snacks at all times. Closed Sundays.

 

EC4 YE OLDE COCK TAVERN: 22 Fleet Street. (B2/15). Trumans. Trumans Bitter, Trumans Best, Websters , Trumans Sampson. Formerly the Cock & Bottle, known by the famous from Pepys to Tennyson and, until the 1880's situatied across the road in Apollo Court where it was built in 1549 and survived the Great Fire which came close to St Dunstan's. The cellars run beneath the vaults of Temple Church. The pub sign was worked by Grinling Gibbons, carver to Charles II. Food at all times. Function room and restaurant. Closed at weekends and closes at 9pm weekdays.

 

EC4 DANDY ROLL: Gateway House - Bread Street. (A1/16). Whitbread. Brakspears PA, Greene King Abbott. Pub under office block. Theatrical posters and cartoons. Wood used in decor to good effect. Two hot dishes per day (and possibly some food). Musak and jukebox. Opens 11. 30am to 3pm and 5pm to 9pm butmay close earlier if there is no custom (not likely). Closed weekends.

 

EC4 DEACONS: 6 Walbrook. (A1/17). Bass. Charrington IPA. All too frequent in the City, a bottom of an office block type establishment. Have tried and failed, to create the atmosphere of a French chateau (?). One bar with restaurant downstairs and function room. Opens weekdays only, 11. 30am to 3pm and 5pm to 9pm.

EC4 GEORGE: 25 Old Bailey. (A2/19). Elderidge Pope. Elderidge P Roy, Elderidge P DB, EP IPA , Palmers IPA . Freehold was held by the Blacksmiths Company in the nineteenth century. One of two Eldridge Pope tied houses in the City and is very expensive. Snacksat all times and cooked meals at lunchtime. Darts, function room. 11. 30 to 3pm and 5. 30 to 11pm closed at weekends.

 

EC4 GLOBE: 66/67 Shoe Lane. (A2/20). Watney Combe Reid. Websters, Watneys Combe Bitter, Ruddles County. Plush establishment in modern building. Has upstairs and downstairs bars. Cooked meals lunchtime, snacks in the evening. Darts. Function room. Closed weekends.

 

EC4 GOLDEN FLEECE: 9 Queen Street. (A1/21). Greene King. Formerly Sam Smiths, now sells the Greene King range of beers. Large busy two bar split level Edwardian pub with plenty of seating plus table space and quick service food. Restaurant and bar downstairs. Darts. Closes at 9pm weekdays. Closed weekends. Pub name is after the fleece of a ram hung in Colchis in Asia, and which was guarded by a dragon. Jason brought the ' Golden Fleece' from Colchis, with the help of Medea, whom he married.

 

EC4 GREEN MAN: 7 Bucklersbury. (A1/22). Free House. Youngers No3, Shepherd Neame Master Brew, Youngers IPA. In the Mansion House redevelopment area and will eventually be demolished. Crowded corner pub with three interesting bars. Pleasant, ornate Victorian woodwork throughout, including in laid rosewood portraits and scenes. Cold food in bar am and hot food in Dive Bar. Darts by permission only. Stays open till 9pm but closed at weekends. A Finch's pub.

 

EC4 HARROW: 22 Whitefriars Street. (B2/23). Bass. Charrington IPA. This multi-layered, three bar pub allows entrance from Primrose Hill to the Micawber room middle bar, and downstairs bar, which also has access from Whitefriars Street. Function room and restaurant. EC4 KING & KEYS: 142 Fleet Street. (A2/27). Ind Coope. Friary Meux, Taylor Walker, Burton. Snacks. Opens at 5pm on Saturday. Next to the Daily Express building.

 

EC4 YE OLDE LONDON: 42 Ludgate Hill (A2/28). Scott & New. Scotch Youngers, Youngers No3, Youngers IPA. City breakfast served from Monday to Friday from 7. 45am - 9am. Open from 11. 30am to 3pm and 5pm to 10. 30pm Monday to Friday and Saturday lunchtime only. Take the prospective in-laws here. The upstairsbar is used mainly by regulars. Downstairs is reputedly the site of an old debtors' prison; it nowhas a carvery grill, and even a library for a quiet read in the evening.

 

EC4 LONDON STONE: 105 Cannon Street. (A1/29). Trumans. Trumans Bitter, Trumans Sampson, Websters. One bar pub named after a large stone wich stood, until 1742, where Cannon Street Station now stands. A fragment can be seen nearby in the wall of theOverseas Chinese Banking Corporation offices. Snacks and meals at lunchtime, darts, video and musak. Opens from 11. 30am to 3pm and 5. 30 to 8. 30ish depending on the custom. Closed weekends.

 

EC4 LUDGATE CELLARA: 1 Apothecary Street. (B2/30). Whitbread. Whitbread Wethereds, Whitbread Flowers Original, REAL CIDER , Greene King Abbot, Boddingtons Bitter, Winter Royal. Large cellar type establishment under railway arches with several different area to choose from. Mixture of pub, wine bar, and restaurant. Immediateatmosphere with candles. Has 6 dartboards (booking only). Weekdays only 11. 30-3pm and 5-9pm but sometimes later.

 

EC4 MAGPIE & STUMP: 18 Old Bailey. (A2/31). Bass. Charrington IPA, Bass. Two bar wood-panelled pub rebuit in the 1930's. Used to be a vantage point for executions. Newgate Gaol as opposite, see Viaduct Tavern EC1.

 

EC4 MASTER GUNNER: 37 Cathedral Place. (A2/32). Free House. Charrington IPA, Bass, Watneys Combe Bitter. A Finch's pub. All real ales available upstairs and in downstairs restaurant. Modern pub part of St. Pauls precinct. Darts. Closes at 9pm weekdays and closed at the weekend.

 

EC4 MONUMENT TAVERN: 60 King William Street. (B1/33). Fullers. Fullers London Pride, Fullers Chiswick, Fullers ESB. Became a Fullers pub in 1985 having been accquired from Ind Coope. Victorian style with a long bar. No overalls allowed. Opens from 11. 30 - 3 and 5pm -9. 30pm. Closed Saturday and Sunday evenings. Just around the corner from Wren's 345-step Monument to the Great Fire of 1666.

 

EC4 OLD BELL: 95 Fleet Street. (B2/34). Free House. Boddingtons Bitter, Tetley Bitter, Belhaven 80/- , Harveys Bitter. A Nicholson's Tavern. Also sells Old Bell Bitter. Basic, friendly, uncrowded one bar pub in a pleasant leafly location opposite St Bride's Church, in a quiet backwater off Fleet Street. Interesting relief tiling on back facade. This pub dates from the 1670's, when it was a base forthe workers rebuilding the church, destroyed in the Fire of London. Darts. Snacks. Function room. Closed Saturday night and all Sunday.

 

EC4 OLD KING LUD: Ludgate Circus (A2/35). Whitbread. Whitbread Wethereds, Whitbread Flowers Original, Greene King Abb. Fine Victorian exterior spoilt by modern sunblinds. The split level interior, much renovated, belies the the pub's age. Part of the bar is under Holborn Viaduct-Blackfriars Railway. Music and dancing license applied for, possible disco's on Wed and Thurs. Has a "Pizza Hut"! Usual City weekday hours and open only at weekends during the lunchtime session.

 

EC4 PAVILION END: 23 Watling Street. (A1/36). Free House. Youngs Special, Courage Best Bitter, Courage Directors. Rambling slightly pricey place that has a strong old style cricketing theme. Constant cricket videos on display. Darts. Function room. Lunchtime food. Closed weekends. Closes at 8. 30pm on weekdays. John Smith's cask bitter expected.

 

EC4 POPPINJAY: 118 Fleet Street. (A2/37). Bass. Charrington IPA, Bass. One bar pub with snacks and darts. Opens at 5pm on Saturday. A poppinjay was the crest of Cirencester Abbey which owned a town house nearby in the 14th century.

 

EC4 PORTERS LODGE: Arthur Street. (B1/38). Bass. Charrington IPA, Bass. Basement pub which possably replaces one called the Ticket Porter demolished long ago. Exterior resembles a World War II gun emplacement and the inside a large regency gentlemens library (the library, not the gentlemen). 11. 30 - 3pm, 5 - 9. 30pm.

 

EC4 PRINTERS' DEVIL: 98 Fetter Lane. (A2/39). Whitbread. Whitbread Wethereds, Samuel Whitbread Strong Ale. Formerly the Vintner's Arms. The 'devil' is the urchin-like errand boy of tradition. Showplace pub with history of printing on the walls and other paraphernalia. Restaurant. Darts. Opens at 5pm on Saturday.

 

EC4 PUNCH TAVERN: 99 Fleet Street. (B2/40). Free House. Charrington IPA, Bass, Tetley Bitter, Boddingtons Bitter. Typical Nicholson's tavern in that a tasteful renovation has been made which enhances character of this establishment. The tapestries were subject to renovation, now everyone can see what was below the layer of smoke and grime. Worth a visit. Darts. Live music Wed/Sat/Sun lunchtime. Food lunchtime and evening. Opens at 5pm on Saturday.

 

EC4 QUEENS ARMS: 30 Queen Street. (B1/41). Courage. Courage Best Bitter, Courage Directors. Straight forward honest pub with wood panelling, furniture, and tables divided by 1/2 partitions. Darts, snacks in the evenings, meals at lunchtime. Weekday opening 11. 30-3pm and 5-11pm (10pm on Fridays). Open Saturday lunchtime. Reputed to be one ofthe original five 'Dirty Dick' pubs. Building owned by LRT as the tube runs below it. The tiles are said to date back to the time when this building was part of a poorhouse.

 

EC4 QUEENS HEAD: 31 Blackfriars Lane. (B2/42). Ind Coope. Adnams Bitter, Tetley Bitter, Boddingtons Bitter, Burton. An ex Nicholsons Tav. Rare basic City PH with semi-circular bar, unique in the City. This one time backstreet pub is a totally detached building (the rest being dealt with by the Adolf Hitler Demolition Co Ltd). Modern developers have not yet finished the job. Also, survival of the pub in the last large bomb site in the City, must be a matter of time. Darts, meals at lunchtime, snacks in the evening. Closed Saturday evenings and all Sunday.

 

EC4 RED LION: 17 Watling Street. (A1/43). Bass. Charrington IPA, Bass. Modern pub with function room and downstairs restaurant. Cooked meals at lunchtime and evening snacks. Closed weekends.

 

EC4 RISING SUN: 61 Carter Lane. (B2/44). Trumans. Trumans Bitter, Trumans Best, Trumans Sampson. The 'Green' masquerades as Cathedral Bitter. Recently refurbished in the spartan style of Firkin establishments. This 160 year old listed building hasalways been a pub. Known by some as the "Vicars" which is not surprising as it is in the shadow of St. Pauls. Function room and restaurant. Opens at5pm on Saturday. Real Fire.

EC4 SAMUEL PEPYS: Brooks Wharf - 48 Upper Thames Street. (B1/48). Bass. Charrington IPA, Bass. Multi-level riverside pub with good views upstairs. Only pub in London with its own ticker tape. Food at all times. Opens at 6pm on Saturday.

 

EC4 SEA HORSE: 92 Queen Victoria Street. (B1/49). Courage. Courage Best Bitter, Courage Directors, John Smiths. Modern one bar pub. Built on the site of the Old Mermaid Tavern, destroyed by the Great Fire. Bric-a-brac, books etc inside. Secondhand dealers must be making a fortune out of this sort of thing. 11. 30 - 3pm, 5 - 11pm. Food served till 10pm.

 

EC4 SHADES: 5/6 Bucklersbury. (A1/50). Sam Smiths. Sam Smiths OBB, Museum Ale. Large single bar. Relatively quiet and uncrowded compared with the GreenMan next door. Shades was established in 1795 and rebuilt in 1874. In danger of being demolished as part of the Mansion House Plan. Food. Darts and bar billiards. Closes at 9pm weekdays and is only open for the Saturday lunchtime session at weekends.

 

EC4 SIR CHRISTOPHER WREN: 17/19 Paternoster Square. (A2/51). Watney Combe Reid. Websters, Watneys Stag. Three bars, one of which is a cocktail bar, real ale available in the other two. Opens Sundays for functions (room for 250) and Saturdays in the summer for tourists. Darts. Food lunchtime and evenings

 

EC4 SMITHFIELDS PAST & PRESENT: 334-338 Central Markets. (A2/52). Free House. Whitbread Flowers Original, Samuel Whitbread Strong Ale, Greene King Abbot. Plain pricey ground floor bar with bare floorboards and smart clientele. Cellar restaurant and bar. Function room. Darts. Opens at 5pm Saturday but closed Sunday.

 

EC4 SPATZ: Hill House - Shoe Lane. (A2/53). Courage. Courage Best Bitter, Courage Directors. Formerly the Crown & Anchor. Ultra modern pub with Wimpy atmosphere, catering for a wide range of tastes. Has its own restaurant and function room. Outside seating.

 

EC4 SQUARE RIGGER: 2 Arthur Street. (B1/54). Bass. Charrington IPA. . A 1960's built reconstruction of an eighteenth century ship of the line, completewith rigging, stuffed seagulls and variety of nautically named bars. Lunchtime meals and evening snacks. Closes at 9. 30pm on weekdays and all the weekend.

 

EC4 SUGAR LOAF: 65 Cannon Street. (A1/55). Bass. Charrington IPA, Bass. Comfortable one bar pub with dark wood panelled, attractive glasswork and preservation order. Snacks. Stays open till 9pm but is only open for the Saturday lunchtime session at weekends.

 

EC4 SWEETINGS: 39 Queen Victoria Street. (A1/56). Free House. Arkells BB. One of the very last old style oyster bars and restaurants in the City and the only one with real ale; the whole place is a surprising survival from the turn of the century and well worth a visit, even casual drinkers are served with beer in pewter tankards. Pay on the way out at the cash desk! Open from 11. 30am to 3pm weekdays only.

 

EC4 TIPPERARY: 66 Fleet Street. (B2/57). Greene King. Greene K IPA, Greene King Abbot, Rayments BBA. Closed. Long narrow pub with lots of genuinely old wood panelling and counter etc. Cosy upstairs bar with a real fire. Interesting Guinness adverts on wall. Closed on Sundays and Saturday evenings. Meals at all times.

 

EC4 YE OLDE WATLING: 29 Bow Lane. (A1/59). Bass. Charrington IPA, Bass. Reputedly built by Sir Christopher Wren, the pub has been restored but is unspoilt, with wooden panelling and interesting prints of Wren's churches. No dirty clothes. Hot & cold snacks am. Upstairs restaurant. Darts.

 

EC4 WHITE HART: 3 New Fetter Lane. (A2/60). Courage. Courage Best Bitter. Photos of celebrities on the walls. Known locally as the 'Stab in the Back'. Cooked meals. Opens at 5pm

 

EC4 WHITE HORSE: 90 Fetter Lane. (A2/61). Ind Coope. Friary Meux, Taylor Walker, Burton. Informal two bar corner pub, well worn comfortable modern interior. The Jorrocks Room comemorates the hero in a novel by Robert Smith Surtees, a nineteenth century novelist who visited the pub which, built in the seventeenth century, used to be on the site. Has a plate collection and real gas lights renovated by the guv'nor Mike. Restaurant and function room. Opens at 5pm on Saturday.

EC4 WHITE SWAN: 108 Fetter Lane. (A2/63). Bass. Charrington IPA, Bass. Flower bedecked exterior, smart flock papered one bar interior with black seats, matching suspended ceiling beams; plates and old prints are on the wall. The upstairs 'Annie's Bar' also serves real ale. Grills Mon-Fri lunchtime and snacks in the evening. Opens at 5pm on Saturday.

 

EC4 WILLIAMSONS TAVERN: 1 Groveland Court. (A1/64). Free House. Wadworths 6X, Tetley Bitter, Adnams Bitter, Boddingtons Bitter, Bass. A Nicholson's Tavern. Situated in a quiet alleyway the pub has been in the Williamson family for over 200 years. Bar and restaurant on ground floor. Wine Bar downstairs. Stays open till 8pm. Closed weekends.

 

EC4 WITNESS BOX: 36 Tudor Street. (B2/65). Watney Combe Reid. Watneys Combe Bitter, Websters, Ruddles County. One bar pub with food at both sessions. Closed weekends.
