The pub is opposite Bunhill Cemetery and the Honourable Artillery Company Ground, headquarters of the oldest regiment in the British Army. Has occasional cheap beer promotion evenings. EC1 Betsey: 56 Farringdon Road . Watneys., No real ale despite the London Bitter sign outside. In mid 1983 was up for sale.

 

EC1 BISHOPS FINGER: 8 West Smithfield Shepherd Neame. SHEPHERD NEAME MASTER BREW. Closed all w/es., early morning licence for market workers. Large comfortable one bar pub formerly named 'The Rutland', a name still to be seenin large letters across the first floor. The current name recalls that which used to be given in Kent to signposts shaped line an index finger. Luntchtime food/Snacks at all times/Darts . in large letters across the first floor. EC1 CASTLE: 43 Cowcross Street . Charrington. CHARRINGTON IPA, DRAUGHT BASS. Opens 8pm on Saturday eves and closed all Sunday. Large busy semi-circular bar; a pawnbroker's sign and a large painting commorate a former licensee of this pub lending George IV money for a bet, with a watch assecurity, upon which he accepted as reward the right to practice as a pawnbroker. EC1 City Pride: Rumoured to be the name Fullers have chosen for their recently acquired pub, ‘The Wihte Swan’ 28 Farringdon Lane. Possible opening by the end of 1983.

Dating from 1815, this large busy interesting two bar pub stands on a corner near the Marx Memorial Library. A collection of clocks is now in the "Next Door"restaurant next to the pub & under the same management. A pub has been on this site since 1123; in Tudor time it was a centre for tailors & cloth merchants and was used as a court for offenders in thatprofession. The name is a play on that of Sir Christopher Hatton, who owned a large estate in the area in the time ofElizabeth I and who has a pub named after him in Leather Lane. This riverside pub was originally built about 550 years ago and is reputed to have been known to Pepys, Judge Jeffereys and Dickens.
